OTHER: Zanthoxylum Simulans, the Szechuan Pepper plant, is a shrub to small tree that is actually in the citrus family, not the pepper family. They are native to eastern China & Taiwan, & are cold hardy to Zone 5. The plants are able to grow in nearly any type of soil including clay, & can even tolerate full shade. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The bushes are actually quite ornamental! They have pretty white flowers in clusters that turn to cluster of 3-4mm pink fruit. The pink shells later open to reveal shiny black seeds. The stems have spines, & the foliage is fragrant when it’s crushed. In fall, the leaves turn lovely shades of yellow, orange, & orangey-red. The plants are dioecious, so you will need both male & female plants for pollination.

It is the pink seed shells or husks that are the edible spice called Szechuan Pepper. The seeds actually have no flavor, but will fall out & get out of your way so you can easily pick the fragrant pink pods. Szechuan Pepper is commonly used in Chinese & Indian cuisine. The husks can be used whole, or ground into powder. It is one of the ingredients for five-spice powder. Szechuan Pepper has a stronger flavor than black pepper with a unique somewhat citrusy flavor.

OTHER: The Strawberry Tree is a shrub or small tree originally from The Mediterranean & Western Europe. They are grown both for their edible fruit as well as their ornamental value. While The Strawberry Tree can grow to 30’ tall, the plants typically do not reach that height or width in cultivation. They can even be grown in containers, & will tolerate dryness or clay soil well.

The Strawberry Tree has dark green glossy evergreen leaves & fragrant flowers that are scented like honey. They are high in nectar, & honey bees will be sure to visit. The flowers are white, & bloom in clusters of drooping bell shaped blossoms.

Strawberry Tree fruit takes a year to mature. It starts out green, slowly changing through lemony yellow to peach & orangey pink, on to red with shade I’ve never seen before in between :) The fruits do not mature all at the same time, so you will get to enjoy all of the different fruit colors at once, as well as the white flowers, all at the same time.

The Strawberry Tree’s fruit is round & knobby with a 1” (2 cm) diameter. The edible fruit is sweet & tastes similar to a fig. They can be eaten raw or made into jams, deserts, drinks, & liqueurs. The birds also like to eat the berries.

OTHER: The African Iris is one of my personal favorites! I absolutely adore their giant colorful 3” flowers, & their evergreen long grass-like leaves that grow in neat clusters & never look scraggly. These plants are an excellent choice for any location, from being used as a specimen plant to beds & borders, containers, or rock gardens. African Iris’ are quite tolerant of heat & drought, & can thrive in a variety of settings from desert to coastal conditions. They are deer & rabbit resistant too.

This East African native is hardy in zones 8 – 11, but can be fully enjoyed in cooler climates. They grow quickly enough to be enjoyed as an annual, can be brought indoors over the winter, or grown as a houseplant year round. The plants will also form corms that can be dug in fall & stored over the winter to replant the following spring. Of course you can also collect your own plant’s seeds to start even more beauties too!

In the garden, the huge showy blooms will attract bees & butterflies, but they are also a popular cut flower despite the fact that each bloom lasts only 1 day, because there are so many flowers per stalk. More great news – they are nicknamed ‘Fortnight Lily’ because they bloom approximately every 2 weeks, giving you a long season filled with continuous enjoyment.

Side note – I read an article that stated parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested – I was not able to find another source to validate this, so am not certain if that is correct, but figured it was best to play it safe & tell you not to eat them.
