OTHER: Cannas are very easy to grow, & offer both very attractive foliage and flowers. They will give you an excellent tropical effect, and the large slender blooms are a magnet for HUMMINGBIRDS and butterflies. Cannas are native to the tropics and subtropics but if you live in an area with cold winter temperatures, you can simply lift and store the tubers to enjoy them again next season. The plants I started from seeds have made nice house plants (they look great in containers!) and they will flower the first year if placed outdoors. These plants really divide. I planted 5 bulbs the year before and dug up 12 in the fall. This year I had over 25. The seeds are said to live for over 600 years and will sprout, even after going through wildfires. Cannas are an all around winner!

OTHER: The Nepal Lily is an Asian native with huge showy trumpet shaped blooms in maroon & light green. These amazing beauties can have as many as 8 flowers to a stem! The blooms are fragrant, but this romantic flower has a much stronger fragrance at night than during the day. They make a lovely cut flower!
These lilies do need some extra moisture in the spring while they are growing, but they do need to be placed somewhere with good drainage. The bulbs cannot be in a wet place in the ground over winter or they can crack. Grow them anywhere that’s well drained including rock gardens, sandy soils, & containers.

OTHER: The Pistachio Tree is the source of the incredibly popular edible Pistachio Nut. Pistacia Vera is native to parts of Asia & the Middle East, but is now grown commercially in many parts of the world. The trees are slow growing, & typically only reach 20' at most in cultivation. This desert plant tolerates drought well, & enjoys hot sunny conditions.
The beautiful spring flower clusters turn to showy clusters of fruit. The hard shelled seeds of the fruit are pistachios, & they can be eaten raw or cooked. Add them to salads, in soups & stir fries, with fish or poultry dishes, countless deserts, or as an ice cream topping :)
From Wikipedia: The seed, commonly thought of as a nut, is a culinary nut, not a botanical nut. The fruit has a hard, creamish exterior shell. The seed has a mauvish skin and light green flesh, with a distinctive flavor. When the fruit ripens, the shell changes from green to an autumnal yellow/red, and abruptly splits part way open.
So, the nuts naturally open when they are mature, & this is when they should be harvested. The plants are dioecious, so both male & female plants are needed for pollination. The trees are very showy with beautiful red buds & flowers, as well as the many color changing fruit that has lovely shades. Wildlife will enjoy eating the pistachios too if you are kind enough to leave some for them :)

The plants I started from seeds have made nice house plants (they look great in containers!) and they will flower the first year if placed outdoors. These plants really divide. I planted 5 bulbs the year before and dug up 12 in the fall. This year I had over 25. Alternately, the tubers can be dried and ground for baking or eaten raw or cooked. Additionally. you can even scarify the seeds and start them in a jar full of water and hydrogen peroxide. The dried hard seeds are also cherished by musicians for their use in shakers. The seeds are said to live for over 600 years and will sprout, even after going through wildfires. Cannas are an all around winner!

Size: We fill our Sampler Teas in a 2.5oz Windowed Tin. Weight by volume. Teas range from 0.3-0.7oz by weight. Depending how strong you like your tea, you can get 10-15 or more teas out of each tin.
Take 1-2 TSP of loose leaf tea, grabbing as much of a variety of each herb as you can for optimal effect, then grind either in a mortar and pestle or between your fingers. Place tea into a strainer ball or an empty tea bag and steep in boiling hot water, stirring often (typically 5-15 minutes until color of hot water changes and aroma of tea fills the room). Add honey and sugar and serve.

OTHER: The Patchouli plant is a small tropical shrub native to Asia. It is the source of patchouli oil which has been used for centuries both in traditional medicine & for its fragrance. This herb is grown commercially for its oil that it is extracted from the leaves, which can be harvested several times a year. Patchouli oil is very strongly fragranced with a scent described as woody & earthy. It is used to make perfumes, incense, air fresheners, & bug repellent. Patchouli is a tender perennial, but can be grown as a houseplant. The leaves are not fragrant on the plant. (They become fragrant when they are fermented.) The flowers of the Patchouli plant are fragrant though.
