OTHER: The Flameleaf Sumac is native to North America. It is named for its large leaves that turn flame red in fall. The summer blooms are large clusters of yellow flowers that turn to very showy fall fruit. The drupes of ornamental of dark red berries measure 8” long. The plants are dioecious, so both male & female plants are needed for pollination. Sumac trees provide cover for birds & other wildlife that will very much enjoy eating the berries.
This Dwarf Sumac is very popular because it is so lovely & easy to get along with. They are great for containers, & are very tolerant of pollution making them a beloved choice for street trees & are used in medians & along highways. This Sumac is very tolerant of many conditions including drought or poor drainage, & soil that is sandy, heavy clay, rocky, or shallow. For these reasons they are also great for erosion control. They are deer & rabbit resistant too!

OTHER: Goat's Rue is a prairie plant that is native to The US & Canada. They are found naturally in areas that are dry, sandy, & rocky, so can tolerate these conditions well. They are also able to grow in part sun. Goat’s Rue is a legume, so can help fix the nitrogen levels of the soil to improve its fertility.
The beautiful flowers of Goat’s Rue look similar to those of sweet peas. They bloom in clusters & are very showy with yellow upper petals & bright pink bottom petals. The leaves have a ferny feathery shape. The foliage is hairy, giving the plants a shimmery silvery appearance.
The flowers provide nectar & pollen bees & butterflies. Goat’s Rue is also a host plant for the Skipper Butterfly. The seeds & plants are mildly toxic to humans & livestock if they are eaten, so be sure to plant them somewhere they will not cause any harm. The 2" long seed pods develop by fall, & the seeds of the Goat’s Rue are eaten by game birds like turkey.

For the grand finale, the glossy bluish-green leaves turn orange, peach, yellow, red, & purplish in fall. It has a medium growth rate, growing about 1 - 2' a year. OTHER: The Western Snowberry is a small creeping shrub native to the western US & Canada. One of its other common names is Wolfberry, but it is not the same as Goji Berries which are also called Wolfberries. This Snowberry is naturally found in growing in dry prairies & on hillsides, so it is a great choice is great for erosion control. They are able to grow in sand or gravel, & clay as long as there is drainage. The Snowberry can also grow in coastal conditions & tolerates pollution well. It can even grow in full shade.
The spring flowers bloom in clusters, with pink outer petals & white inside that gives them a lovely contrast. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, & HUMMINGBIRDS. The fall berries are quite ornamental, but not edible for humans. Birds & other small woodland critters love to eat them though!
