OTHER: Chaenomeles Japonica is a popular ornamental dwarf shrub that is native to Japan. The Dwarf Quince only grows to 3 – 4’ in height, but twice as wide. They tolerate pruning well, so you can reduce their width if you’d like, or use them as a bonsai specimen. The plants tolerate drought & clay, & most soil conditions except wet. They can even grow in full shade but produce less fruit, which doesn’t matter if you wish to use their thorny branches as a security plant, or to help control erosion.
Extremely showy bright red flowers absolutely cover the plant in spring before the foliage appears, & they can rebloom later in the season. The flowers are fragrant, & bloom in 1 1/2" clusters. This Dwarf Flowering Quince is a great source of nectar & pollen for bees including honey bees. The ornamental 1 1/2" apple shaped fruit matures a greenish yellow in fall. The fruit is very fragrant with a wonderful sweet spicy scent. They are so heavily fragranced, the fruits are used as an air freshener. Animals also enjoy eating the fruit.
We also have mixed colors Flowering Quince & Japanese Quince seeds available!

OTHER: The Silver Buffaloberry is a beautiful & useful native shrub that hails from central & western North American with a native range north from Canada & south to California. Buffaloberries are wonderful as an ornamental, an edible, as living fences, in wildlife gardens, & for erosion control.
These low-maintenance shrubs tolerate a wide variety of growing conditions from drought to moderate flooding, maritime influences such as salt & wind, & poor soils ranging from sandy to rocky to heavy clays. The Buffaloberry can be found in a wide variety of areas from prairies to dry limestone canyons & thrive along the moist edges of rivers, streams, & lakes. This shrub can even help fix nitrogen & prevent soil erosion on banks. They are very cold hardy but also perform very well in hot climates.
The Silver Buffaloberry's leaves are covered in fine silvery hairs that give it a lovely shimmery appearance. It's tubular yellow flowers are fairly small, but numbering in the thousands & blooming very early in the season before the leaves appear, they will not go unnoticed. They are very bushy thicket-forming shrubs with thorned branches, making them a good choice for a living fence or border, also providing shelter for a large number of small animals & an excellent nesting site for songbirds, who will love love love to eat their berries come fall. Deer browse the foliage, which could be good or bad in your eyes depending on your purpose for planting :) The plants are dioecious, so if fruit is desired, both male & female plants are needed.
In fall, Buffaloberry shrubs are smothered in an abundance of showy red edible fruit (that is not technically a berry despite the name). The fruit measures about 1/4" in size & is tart but sweetens up after a frost. Buffaloberries can be eaten fresh (raw) or dried, & are often used to make pies, jellies, & sauces. The name is attributed to Native American Indians for who commonly used it as a flavoring / sauce for buffalo meat. It is recommended to eat the fruit in moderation, because it contains saponin, especially in the raw form, as cooking breaks down the saponin. Native Americans used the berries in traditional medicine, & recent studies show the berries to be high in lycopene which is used to combat cancers, heart disease, & more.
Calling all Hawkeyes :) The Silver Buffaloberry is listed as a threatened species in Iowa. You can help restore the native habitat by planting these :)

The scientific name comes from Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, because of the many folk-medicinal uses for the milkweed plants. The dried seed pods are also very interesting for dried arrangements.

The plants have traditional herbal & medicinal uses, are grown as an ornamental shade tree, & are used for erosion control. Woman’s Tongue is a legume, so it helps the nitrogen levels in the soil to improve the soil’s fertility. They are also grown for honey production, with the flowers being very rich in nectar for honey bees, & are harvested for their quality hardwood lumber.
Nicknamed Mimosa Lebbeck, there are many visual similarities to Mimosa Trees, from the flowers to the foliage & seed pods. They are grown as an ornamental with fragrant fuzzy flowers that start out a creamy white & turn to dark yellow. The flowers provide pollen & nectar for bees, butterflies, & HUMMINGBIRDS. The big cool brown seed pods stay on the tree until the next bloom time, & the flowers & pods together on the tree are very showy!

OTHER: The African Iris is one of my personal favorites! I absolutely adore their giant colorful 2” flowers, & their evergreen long grass-like leaves that grow in neat clusters & never look scraggly. These plants are an excellent choice for any location, from being used as a specimen plant to beds & borders, containers, or rock gardens. African Iris’ are quite tolerant of heat & drought, & can thrive in a variety of settings from desert to coastal conditions. They are deer & rabbit resistant too.
This East African native is hardy in zones 8 – 11, but can be fully enjoyed in cooler climates. They grow quickly enough to be enjoyed as an annual, can be brought indoors over the winter, or grown as a houseplant year round. The plants will also form corms that can be dug in fall & stored over the winter to replant the following spring. Of course you can also collect your own plant’s seeds to start even more beauties too!
In the garden, the huge showy blooms will attract bees & butterflies, but they are also a popular cut flower despite the fact that each bloom lasts only 1 day, because there are so many flowers per stalk. More great news – they are nicknamed ‘Fortnight Lily’ because they bloom approximately every 2 weeks, giving you a long season filled with continuous enjoyment.
Side note – I read an article that stated parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested – I was not able to find another source to validate this, so am not certain if that is correct, but figured it was best to play it safe & tell you not to eat them.
* We also have the lovely White African Iris seeds available in our store! The 2 look super fantastic planted together! *
