OTHER: The Nepal Lily is an Asian native with huge showy trumpet shaped blooms in maroon & light green. These amazing beauties can have as many as 8 flowers to a stem! The blooms are fragrant, but this romantic flower has a much stronger fragrance at night than during the day. They make a lovely cut flower!
These lilies do need some extra moisture in the spring while they are growing, but they do need to be placed somewhere with good drainage. The bulbs cannot be in a wet place in the ground over winter or they can crack. Grow them anywhere that’s well drained including rock gardens, sandy soils, & containers.

OTHER: A Hardy Orange? Yes indeed! And no, this isn’t some newfangled creation – it’s an heirloom species native to parts of China & Korea that has been cultivated for thousands of years. They are valued both for their ornamental value as well as for their edible fruit, & they have traditional medicinal uses too.
These deciduous plants are considered a shrub to a small tree – they take pruning well, so can be allowed to bush out or be trimmed into tree form. The Hardy Orange has glossy dark green leaves during the warmer months, & then provide great fall color in jazzy yellow shades as the weather cools. The fruit will remain on the tree throughout the winter if it is not harvested, providing additional interest through all the seasons. The leaves are fragrant, as are the lovely large 2” showy white spring flowers with pink stamens that will attract bees & butterflies.
The Hardy Orange can grow in a wide variety of conditions. They tolerate heat & drought well, & are not picky about soil type. They are able to grow in heavy clay soils, sandy soil, & nutritionally poor soil ranging from very alkaline to acidic. Part shade is perfectly acceptable for growing these, although the plants will produce more fruit in full sun. Hardy Orange shrubs have thorns, making them deer & rabbit resistant, & also a great choice for a ‘security’ type hedgerow. Of course one of the main thrillers is the extreme cold tolerance of this bad boy! The Hardy Orange is commonly used as rootstock for other citrus plants to help increase their cold hardiness. I will caution you though, the plants are ‘borderline’ hardy in Zone 5. If you are in Zone 5, you will want to protect your shrubs with some extra mulch for the winter & grow them in a sheltered location if possible.
Whether or not the Hardy Orange is technically a citrus or is a citrus relative is debated, but after tasting the fruit, I am siding with the citrus camp. The fruit is somewhat bitter with a taste akin to that of a lemon or a grapefruit. You can enjoy it raw, made into juice or jelly, or in any number of recipes from a chutney to smother chicken or in deserts. The fruits start out green & ripen to a deep yellow color in the fall. Hardy Oranges measure 2 - 2 ½” in diameter, & their skin is covered in a light fuzz. They are high in Vitamin C. Each plant can produce as much as 30 pounds of fruit in a season!

OTHER: The Laurel Oak is native to the southeastern United States, where it is a popular urban street & shade tree. They are considered to have a medium to more rapid growth rate, & the trees are also a popular tree for firewood. They can grow up to 120’ tall, but more commonly reach heights of around 60’ with a trunk diameter of up to 5’. This Sand Laurel Oak (different from the Swamp Laurel Oak) tolerates dry and sandy conditions well.
The Laurel Oak has narrow dark shiny evergreen to semi-evergreen leaves & is deer resistant. The spring flowers turn into seeds called acorns in fall. The acorns are poisonous to humans if eaten, but not to the wildlife that loves to snack on them.

OTHER: This Fan Palm is native to Southern Europe & the Western Mediterranean. It is a Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit winner! Chamaerops Humilis has a shrubby clumping habit & stiff evergreen fans that measure up to 2 1/2' wide. The durable leaves of this palm are used for weaving baskets & other things.
The flowers are a lovely buttery yellow, & many small blooms form in clusters to form large upright spikes. The fall fruit of this palm is not eaten by humans, but it is very ornamental! The smooth shiny ovals start out green & turn lovely shades of yellow, orange, & red, & dark red. Mediterranean Fan Palms tolerate drought, humidity, & coastal conditions like salt. The plants are usually dioecious, so you will need both male & female plants if you wish for them to be pollinated. OTHER: The American Hazelnut is a shrub or small tree native to the eastern US & Canada. They are grown for their edible nuts, their value to wildlife, & as an ornamental. The Hazelnut has a medium to fast growth rate. They tolerate soil that is dry or moist, as well as rocky, sandy & heavy clay soil. They can easily pruned into your desired form. The plants have both male & female flowers that look different from one another. The male flowers are 2 - 3" long & showy, & the reddish female flowers turn into fruit (nuts). OTHER: The American Plum is native to the US & Canada. It is a beautiful showy landscape ornamental with delicious edible fruit. They can be grown as a large multi-branched shrub or as a small single-trunked tree.
Blooming early in the spring before the leaves appear, American Plums are smothered with impossible numbers of fragrant white 1" flowers. They are considered to be of special value to honey & other bees as well as butterflies. This Plum is also a larvae host for a wide variety of butterfly species.
The delicious sweet & sour 1" purplish red plums are ready for harvest beginning in August. The fruit is very showy & ornamental, & can be eaten raw (don't eat the seeds) or made into jams, jellies, & wine. Birds & a wide variety of wildlife love to eat this fruit too, so be sure to leave some for our fuzzy & feathered friends :) In fall, the leaves turn a variety of lovely shades ranging from light yellow all the way to bright red.
The shrubs are dense & thicket forming which makes them an excellent windbreak, border, or living fence, as well as providing excellent cover for small mammals & songbirds. Being very cold hardy sturdy plants, the American Plum is often used as rootstock for other plums such as the Domestic Plum. The leaves of the plant are browsed by deer, & the branches can be thorny. Having a suckering root system, the American Plum is used for erosion control in general & is perfect for riverbanks & other areas that can become inundated with water because they can withstand several days of flooding.

OTHER: The Beach Plum is a shrub native to the east coast of the US that produces edible plums.
In nature, they are found on the beaches & coastal sand dunes of New England. While the Beach Plum used to be fairly common, land development has claimed a large amount of their native habitat, so much so that they are now considered endangered in Maine.
In spring, beautiful clusters of fragrant white flowers appear before the dark green glossy leaves. The blooms can be either be single or double & are pollinated by bees & other insects. The leaves of this very cold hardy shrub turn lovely shades of orange & red in the fall. Wild plant’s plums come in a variety of colors ranging from yellow to red to blue to a nearly black deep purple.
Enjoy the plums fresh right off the shrub, dry them for later use, or make them into jams, pies, or wine, for which they are grown commercially. The delightful little plums measure 0.6 – 0.8” & are high in antioxidants.
Beach Plums can be grown in pure sand, gravel or gravely soil, or gardens with well draining soil. Being native to coastal dunes, they tolerate full sun, drought, salt spray, & cold temps extremely well. This plum is a very enjoyable low maintenance plant to grow, especially for those challenging areas of the yard. The Beach Plum typically grows between 42 – 78” tall in its native beachside habitat, but can reach heights of up to 13’ in cultivated gardens. These thick, dense, suckering shrubs make an excellent border / hedge row when left to grow in their natural form, or they can be pruned into a single-trunked small tree. While birds & other little critters enjoy the fruit very much, these plants should be kept away from livestock that may browse the leaves, & humans should not consume the seeds.

Camphor Trees are the source of camphor, & is used for its oils used in many things. It is also used as a shade tree & a windbreak, & has many medicinal properties & the ability to repel bugs. This tree is met with mixed feelings though. OTHER: The Artichoke Agave is an evergreen succulent native to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, & Mexico. These drought tolerant plants thrive in hot, dry, sunny locations & grow well in sandy or rocky soil. This Agave is both deer & rabbit resistant. They are an excellent choice for desert gardens, rock gardens, beds, borders, & containers. In time, the plants will reproduce by sending out offsets to form colonies.
The ‘Huachucensis’ variety sports more leaves that are flatter & wider than those of the regular Agave Parryi, & its silvery-blue rosette’s tight centers resemble an artichoke, earning it its common name. The leaf tips feature brown spines which provide nice visual contrast & interest, but these spines can be clipped off to make the plant ‘friendlier’ if it’s planted near walkways, etc.
This Agave plant’s foliage forms a neat tidy mound of 2 – 3’ wide & high, but its tall flower spikes will shoot up to 15’ in the air. The showy yellow blooms will attract bees, butterflies, & HUMMINGBIRDS! Each Artichoke Agave plant flowers only once in its lifetime, so the seeds are rare. Be sure to get yours while they’re still available!

They can grow as much as 20 - 25' foot by fall! The Cup & Saucer Vine will bloom the first year from July - October, just 20 weeks after sowing, & bloom for 4 long months! The plants can also be grown in containers & overwintered in a greenhouse, where they will flower almost year-round!
When in bloom, the vines become smothered in the showy 2" bell shaped flowers it is named for. The Cup & Saucer Vine has received a Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. They make a wonderful cut flower, and the blooms will float on water!
